Viborg City Hall

MT Højgaard is building the shell for Viborg's new city hall, which has a special roof construction with large spans and tolerances of just a few millimetres. It has called for extreme precision, for example during the installation of a 20 ton steel construction of up to 30 metres in length which carries the roof of the building.

MT Højgaard is using the latest technology, with 3D drawings playing an important role in making this kind of construction work possible.

Sustainable city hall

The city hall, which has a floor area of 20,000 m2, is a five-storey building with glass facades all the way round.  These feature three-layer glazing, which protects against solar heating in summer and reduces the need for cooling.

In all aspects of the new city hall, future energy consumption is taken into account. A solar cell array on the roof is expected to produce 76,000 kWh per year, automatically controlled intake vents in the facades ensure natural ventilation, and thermoactive constructions with pipes embedded in the concrete decking provide cooling in summer and heating in winter.

These initiatives, and others, mean that the city hall will meet the requirements of a Low Energy Class 1 building.

Maintenance is part of the task

MT Højgaard has also been tasked to maintain and be responsible for safety coordination of the city hall construction over the next two years. The new city hall, which is scheduled for completion in 2011, will house 800 employees under the same roof.
