Middelgrunden Offshore Wind Farm

MT Højgaard has supplied and installed the 20 foundations for 2 MW wind turbines on the bank of Oresund close to Copenhagen Harbour.

The wind turbines are installed in a slight curve with a distance of 180 meters between the turbines, covering a total distance of 3.4 kilometres.

High quality level

The construction of the foundations for this large offshore wind farm was a big challenge. However, all problems were handled without compromises whilst retaining a high quality level.

The monolithic foundations are constructed in reinforced concrete, and all 20 concrete foundations were prefabricated in Burmeister & Wain’s old dry dock in Copenhagen and lifted from the dry dock to their final positions by a specially built floating crane.

Foundations prefabricated in dry dock

All accessories were fitted while the foundations were still in the dry dock. One of the three sections of the turbine tower and some of the electrical equipment were also fixed to the foundation in the dry dock.

The foundations were placed on a compacted rock cushion on the seabed by the crane, and the total weight lifted was 1,400 tons.
