Alminde-Viuf Coeducational School

In 2010, Alminde-Viuf Coeducational School near Kolding was extended by 600 m2 on two floors, and now has space for 485 pupils. The extension consisted primarily of offices, a staff room and a music room. The existing school building was also renovated, with new floors, ceilings, lighting and ventilation for the classrooms.

Good idea – a winning parameter

To create space for the new building, the school's old cloakrooms and offices were demolished. Originally these buildings were to be retained and renovated, but MT Højgaard recommended newbuild in preference to renovation on both economic and energy-related grounds. The client, Kolding municipality, agreed with the idea and chose MT Højgaard as the turnkey contractor.

Environment on the curriculum

The school focuses on the environment, so it was natural that the new building was constructed to Energy Class 1 standards. The walls, roof and floor were given extra insulation, the windows had a U value of 1.1, and energy-saving lighting was used, resulting in an average electricity consumption of just 4 W/m2. The building was also equipped with a 30 m2 solar cell array and a ventilation unit with 92% heat recovery.

No trucks in the morning rush

The new, environmentally sound buildings were constructed while the pupils were being taught. This made ongoing communication between the parties especially important in order to prevent problems developing. For example, it was important to avoid disruption when the children were arriving at the school in the morning.

So we arranged with the client that no deliveries would be made to the site between 07:30 and 08:30 so that children could cross the road without bumping into heavy trucks.
