The bridge is distributed on two individual valley spans over the Gudenå river and the lake, Silkeborg Langsø. The motorway bridge measures 350 metres.

Foundations in and under water

When the bridge was to be constructed over Silkeborg Langsø, some 200 of its 350 metres were built over water. The land-based foundations were made by piling 330 reinforced concrete piles for four of the foundations. In the water, the four foundations were created by driving the piles down to an approximately 14 metres depth side by side in the lake bed. For two of the underwater foundations, the casting was carried out using divers. The other two foundations could be tackled with the help of groundwater reduction.

1,500 tonnes of reinforcing iron

When we built the two valley bridges, we used around 1,500 tonnes of reinforcing iron, 8,400 metres of tension cable and 10,000 cubic metres of concrete. The bridge deck is carried by two end abutments and six intermediate supports. The bridge is securely anchored to the two middle intermediate supports; while on the other four supports plus the end abutments, the bridge deck is supported on slide bearings. Each intermediate support carrying the bridge is designed as four pillars angling outwards in a v-shape from the water. There are about 50 metres between the supports.
