4. May College in Aalborg

We have renovated a piece of Danish history

Renovating a piece of Danish history

Over the past two years, we have carried out the extensive renovation of 4. May College in Aalborg, supported financially by the A.P. Møller Foundation. The goal has been to future-proof the listed and historic building, ensuring that future generations of students can continue to experience and contribute to the traditions that have shaped the college since the first students and relatives of resistance fighters moved into Hasserisgade 8 nearly 75 years ago

Among other things, we have:

  • Renovated the building with a clear focus on residents’ needs and everyday life
  • Reused all building components suitable for reuse
  • Preserved a unique history shaped by generations of resistance efforts
  • Retained as much as possible of the building’s original character and atmosphere

A living memorial future-proofed for new generations

Although the building has been modernised, the college’s unique culture lives on. Residents still eat together every weekday, and the characteristic student rooms continue to bear their historic names, including Winston Churchill and Christian X. The renovation has therefore focused on both preserving the building’s history and creating the best possible setting for future generations of students.

The project was shortlisted for the Danish Renovation Award in recognition of the strong result achieved through close collaboration between the client, project partners and contractors. Although the project did not win the award, students can once again move in and carry the story forward.
